Toronto Blue Jays Acquire LHP Yusei Kikuchi from the Houston Astros

菊池 雄星 Makes His Way to Toronto

A New Chapter for the Japanese Ace

In a surprising move, the Toronto Blue Jays have acquired left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi from the Houston Astros in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jake Bloss and outfielder Joey Loperfido. The 6-0, 210-pound Kikuchi, who hails from Morioka High School, has been a mainstay in the Japanese professional baseball league. He spent the past two seasons with the Seattle Mariners before being traded to the Astros in November 2022.

Kikuchi, pronounced YOU-say key-KOO-chee, is known for his impressive fastball and an array of breaking pitches. During his time with the Mariners, he posted a 3.48 ERA and struck out over 1,000 batters. He is expected to be a key part of the Blue Jays' rotation in 2023, bringing much-needed depth to their pitching staff.

The Blue Jays are excited to welcome Kikuchi to their team, and fans are eager to see what he can bring to the organization. His addition to the roster should make the Blue Jays a strong contender in the American League East.

More details on the trade and Kikuchi's role in the Blue Jays' upcoming season will be released at a later date.
