Euro 2024: England Edge Serbia in Group C Opener
Bellingham Inspires Southgate's Men to Narrow Victory
Bellingham Scores Winner as England Claim Three Points
England kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Serbia at the VELTINS-Arena. Jude Bellingham was the hero for Gareth Southgate's side, heading home the winner in the first half.
The result sees England move to the top of Group C, while Serbia are left to rue a missed opportunity. It is only England's second victory in the opening game of a European Championship.
Bellingham's goal came in the 35th minute, when he met a cross from Bukayo Saka with a powerful header. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder was a constant threat to the Serbian defense throughout the match, and his performance will have given Southgate plenty of optimism for the rest of the tournament.
Serbia had their chances to equalize, but they were unable to find a way past Jordan Pickford in the England goal. Aleksandar Mitrovic had a header ruled out for offside in the second half, while Dusan Tadic also went close with a free kick.
In the end, England held on for a valuable three points. They will now face Scotland in their next match, while Serbia will take on Croatia.
